Independence Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. Long before I realized that the celebration brought with it endless amounts of light beer and a long weekend, it had a special place in my heart.
I remember sleepovers at my grandparents lake house with all of my cousins that included s'mores and bonfires by the river with fireworks to follow. We ran around in swimsuits for two or three days, floating around in lifejackets and swinging on tire swings. I never wore shoes. I still don't.
I haven't ever been a very good swimmer, but sitting on a boat has always been a happy place for me - and if I could choose to look at any certain part of nature for the rest of my life it would certainly be a body of water. When it comes to making 4th of July plans in modern day, not much has changed. I still want to be on a boat, and barefoot in a bathing suit. That often means joining someone else's party, or hanging out on a friends boat for the day - and in my opinion that means bringing along some kind of treat. I'm a big fan of thanking the host - and there's no better way than with a festive sweet treat that takes only a few minutes to whip up. This recipe is my any holiday go-to.
The shopping list is very short for these little candies, but can sometimes be tricky if you want to keep within holiday colors. Around the 4th, M&M's can be found in red, white and blue - but you have to look for them. Hunting for holiday candies is the only time I don't mind to visit a Wal-Mart, because they always have everything. They usually hide the special stuff in the front of the store on shelves. Also, if you can't find the red, white and blues you can purchase a normal pack for the red and blue M&M's, then pick up a pack of the s'mores flavor for the white candies. You can also stop my a Party City or other party supply store to buy bags of individual colors if you're really in a pinch. To keep with patriotic colors, using white chocolate Kisses is also an option!
Any shape of pretzel will do, but I prefer the square Snaps - and don't forget the wax paper!
Here are the things you need:
- M&M's in the colors of your choice
- Hershey's Kisses
- wax paper
- Preheat the oven to 170°F.
- Line a baking sheet with wax paper. Lay pretzels out, and place 1 Kiss on top of each pretzel.
- Bake in the oven for 6 minutes.
- Remove from oven and press an M&M into each Kiss - M side down, of course!
- Allow to cool and set.
Mr. K says he can't stop eating these treats. They are so simple and delicious!
