What I'm wearing this week. | More velvet and tons of chokers.
I know that we’ve already had a discussion about velvet, but here I am again in another velvet dress. This one, however, is an elevation of one of my favorite wardrobe staples - the t-shirt dress.
I keep an arsenal of t-shirt dresses in my closet. I think I have 3 or more basic black ones alone. If I ever can’t decide what to wear, or if everything is making me feel completely blah, I throw on a t-shirt dress and get an instant confidence boost every time. There is something so wonderful, simple and understated about what a t-shirt dress conveys.
I just threw this on. I look fabulous yet effortless without trying.
Create this staple in a fun crushed velvet fabric and sign me up every time.
I can’t believe how quickly the trends of my childhood have come back around. The 90s chokers and all the velvet items that have undergone such a resurrection have me in shock. Yesterday, I even heard someone mention their longing for a velour tracksuit. A velour tracksuit?!? What saith you? I must say, I wasn’t interested in walking around with “juicy” on my butt during the original trend, and I don’t think I will be getting into that one as it comes around again now, but as I have said before, I am all in for the velvet. It’s just so damn soft. How could you not love it?
I was listening to a wonderful podcast yesterday on which a fashion icon I shall not name mentioned that to truly have great personal style nothing you wear should be too trendy. This made me think for a moment about the array of velvet items I have been styling lately. It really made me consider how defined my personal style is (or if I have any at all!). After some serious self-reflection, I came to the decision that personal style isn’t about bucking the trends, but more about being mindful of how you work current trends into your wardrobe and the way you pair them with classic staple items. Also, more than anything, personal style is about having the courage to wear what you like - to wear ANYTHING you like. So, If something you like is suddenly trendy and available everywhere, you shouldn’t hide from it. Embrace the trend. Slay it.
For me, this particular look comes down to the accessories. The boots with special chain detail, the simple black choker, the playful tassels hanging on my bag. Adorning your handbag with keychains and pompom balls has been a low-key trend for many months now. These tassels are my way of getting in on the fun. The best part of these bold decorations? I made them myself! Check out my DIY for Chunky Handbag Tassels here.
