Full disclosure: this recipe was inspired by a Vampire Weekend song. On the first track of the band's album Contra, Ezra Koenig sings out "In December, drinking horchata, I'd look psychotic in a balaclava." This lyric recently became the inspiration for my birthday weekend that I was lucky enough to share with some of my favorite people. We made "Birthday Weekend" shirts, we listened to loads of vinyl, and we sipped on spiked horchata punch.
I'll warn you all now. This punch is delicious. If you're serving it to a group of people who aren't familiar with the flavor of horchata, they're going to be surprised at how light and sweet the milky beverage is. Don't let that fool you. This punch is super boozy and will turn the night up in a hurry.
Prep Time = less than 5 minutes / Active Time = 5 minutes / Yield = 8 cocktails
- 2 cups El Jimador silver tequila
- 4 cups horchata
- 5 oz. Velvet Falernum
- juice of 1 lime
- lime rounds for garnish
- Combine horchata, tequila, and Velvet Falernum in a large pitcher or punch bowl filled with ice and mix well. Ladle or pour into ice-filled glasses, and garnish each glass with a lime round.
NOTE: When it comes to the horchata in this recipe, you have three options as to how to come by it. Although it is time-consuming, you can make, you can also buy the pre-made stuff (although I'm not sure that will go as well), or you can do what I did and head down to your local carniceria and pick some up.
