Cold Weather Uniform

Streamline your life, and your wardrobe, when you can. This is my advice to you. Clutter doesn't bring anyone legitimate joy. It weighs us down and frankly makes things more complicated than they have to be. I often have trouble pairing down my closet in the summer.

Blue Velvet

Lana once wrote a song about a girl who wore blue velvet. She croons on about the velvet that was bluer than the night and the girl's eyes, which were also bluer than the velvet she wore. I've always loved the song. Call it self-indulgence, but I connected to it. To me, the song was about me.

Dad's Classic Old Fashioned

If my father is behind the bar at a party or family dinner you will likely find him smiling while muddling a bit of cherry and orange together in a glass. He is always the bartender - whipping up cosmopolitans, Bloody Mary's, or espresso martinis for friends, but nothing does he make with quite as much excitement as he does an Old Fashioned.

Flower Power.

I love this simple outfit because the blue flowers in the top play so well with the color of the denim. The throwback detail at the bottom of these jeans is perfect and really helps to add something extra to a simple look.

Summer Tomato Tarts

I made these colorful summer tomato tarts using some of my favorite flavors: ripe tomato, feta cheese, and fresh basil. These pastries are light yet filling, fluffy while crispy, and suuuuuuper colorful on your table. They are totally headache free. You can even finish putting your makeup on while they get all toasty in the oven.

Creamy Avocado and Lemon Pasta

During the week, when I get home from work, I need meals that are made out of the stuff I always have in my fridge or pantry. For me, that "stuff" is usually a couple of avocados, some lemons, and several half-empty boxes of pasta. Seriously, my pantry is mostly pasta. Isn't yours?

Brooches forever.

I know what you're thinking. "My grandmother wears brooches." Yeah, yeah, yeah. Honestly, during the advent of embellishments, embroidery, and patches it seems like a natural time to appreciate what a nice little collection of brooches can bring to the table. Whether they're vintage or not, sometimes a little extra glitz is exactly what an outfit needs. Full disclosure: these brooches are from my local craft store, but every time I wear them I get SO many compliments. You'd never know they cost less than $10 collectively. I love a look for less.

Silk bomber jackets are life.

Packing for me is so hard. I think about it so far in advance, but I can never act on choosing an outfit or make any actual decisions. You know, decisions. Those tricky things everyone hates making. I'm one of those people too. Where do you want to eat? I don't know.

Anyway. I'm getting ready to head up to New York with some of my girlfriends, and I honestly have no clue what to pack - such is life. I've been trying really hard lately to add things to my closet that I ALWAYS want to wear, but let's be honest - I can't see the future.

Kielbasa Pasta with Mushrooms and Homemade Marinara Sauce

This recipe for kielbasa pasta with mushrooms and homemade marinara sauce is delicious fresh from the pot or as leftovers! This sauce gets even better when it's been sitting in the fridge overnight. All the flavors really marinate and blend. Not to say it isn't great straight from the pot - it totally is! Just to say this is the perfect meal to make ahead of time in a large batch.

What I'm wearing this week. | Denim skirts and dainty scarves.

When small square neck scarves started popping up in the accessories section on some of my favorite brand's websites I was super excited. I have always LOVED wearing a neck scarf. It nods back to a different era, one that I am a big fan of, and adds a little personality to an outfit. I am also a huge fan of a higher neckline, and adding a scarf to a blouse or dress where the neckline is lower gives me that same flattering effect.
